Mental Health Overview

What is a mental health condition?

A mental health condition refers to a diagnosable disorder that affects a person’s mood, thinking, behaviour, or emotional wellbeing. These conditions can range from common issues like anxiety and depression to more complex presentations such as bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or personality disorders.

Mental health conditions may affect how a person feels, interacts with others, copes with stress, or manages daily activities. They can develop gradually or appear suddenly, and may be influenced by genetic, psychological, social, or environmental factors.

Recognising the signs of a mental health condition is the first step toward seeking support. With the right assessment and intervention, many people experience significant improvement in their quality of life.

Assessment Process

Our Assessment Process

Our approach is collaborative, thorough, and person-centred, ensuring that each individual receives a mental health assessment tailored to their unique profile.

This process includes:

Pre-Consultation Preparation

Before the assessment, we gather important background information. This includes demographic details, consent forms, and validated screening questionnaires to help identify key areas of concern.

Evidence-Based Psychological Measures

We use standardised, research-backed tools to assess mental health symptoms and their severity. These measures help guide diagnosis and inform tailored treatment planning.

Contextual Understanding

We explore the individual’s lived experience across settings — including home life, education, work, and social care. This helps us understand how symptoms impact day-to-day functioning.

Comprehensive Clinical and Psychosocial Assessment

Through structured interviews and clinical observation, we assess emotional wellbeing, behaviour, interpersonal relationships, and functional challenges across various domains of life.

Step 5

Medical and Developmental History

We take a detailed medical history, including prenatal and perinatal factors, family mental health history, previous diagnoses, and current physical or mental health conditions.

Diagnostic Formulation

We integrate all findings using clinical expertise and diagnostic frameworks. This helps us develop a clear understanding of the presenting difficulties and their underlying causes.

Feedback & Diagnostic Report

You will be invited to a feedback appointment where we review the outcome of the assessment in detail.

A comprehensive written report is also provided, including the diagnostic conclusion (if applicable), a strengths-based formulation, and tailored recommendations for further support, treatment, or accommodations.

Assessment

The Importance of a Mental health Assessment

A professional mental health assessment provides more than just a diagnosis—it offers individuals and families a deeper understanding of their strengths, challenges, and needs.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should consider a mental health assessment?

Anyone experiencing emotional distress, persistent low mood, anxiety, difficulties coping with everyday life, or uncertainty about their mental health may benefit from a formal assessment. It can offer clarity, validation, and guidance on the most appropriate next steps.

That said, a formal mental health assessment is not always required to begin treatment or therapy. Many people choose to start therapy without a diagnosis.

A structured assessment is most helpful for those who are seeking a diagnostic report, need documentation to support access to services or accommodations, or would prefer to gain a clearer understanding of their mental health before deciding on treatment.

What kinds of conditions can a mental health assessment identify?

Our assessments can help identify a range of conditions including anxiety, depression, trauma-related disorders (e.g. PTSD), OCD, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders. Where appropriate, we also assess for neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD or ASD if they are contributing to mental health difficulties.

What if I’m not sure what I’m struggling with?

You don’t need to know exactly what’s wrong before seeking help. Our assessments are designed to explore a broad range of emotional and psychological concerns, even if you’re unsure how to describe your experience. Many clients come to us simply knowing that something doesn’t feel right.

Can a mental health assessment help if I already have a diagnosis?

Yes. Even if you’ve previously received a diagnosis, an updated assessment can provide deeper insight, clarify complex presentations, or help inform changes in treatment or support. It’s particularly useful if your symptoms have changed or you're not responding to previous interventions.

Do I need a referral for a mental health assessment?

No referral is required. You can self-refer directly to The Neurodevelopmental Clinic. However, we are also happy to accept referrals from GPs, schools, or other healthcare professionals with your consent.

Can I involve someone in my assessment?

Yes. If appropriate, you may invite a partner, parent, or trusted support person to contribute to parts of the process or provide collateral information. This can be especially helpful for younger clients or those who may have difficulty describing their history or experiences.

Is a mental health assessment the same as therapy?

No. A mental health assessment is a structured process focused on understanding your symptoms, history, and functioning in order to guide diagnosis and treatment planning. However, many clients choose to continue with therapy after the assessment, and we can help you plan next steps.

Can children and adolescents have mental health assessments?

Yes. We offer mental health assessments for children, adolescents, and young adults. Our approach is age-appropriate, evidence-based, and tailored to developmental stage and individual needs. We work closely with families and schools (with consent) when relevant.

How long does a mental health assessment take?

The process typically involves multiple stages over one or more sessions. It includes pre-assessment questionnaires, clinical interviews, psychological measures, and — where appropriate — input from others such as family members or educators. A full assessment may take several hours, depending on complexity.

What happens after the assessment?

You will be invited to a feedback appointment where we discuss the results, insights, and recommendations in detail. A comprehensive written report is provided, which includes a summary of findings and next steps for treatment or support.

Will I receive a diagnosis?

If a formal diagnosis is appropriate, it will be provided in line with recognised diagnostic criteria. However, not all mental health difficulties result in a diagnosis — the aim is to understand your experiences and offer guidance, whether or not a diagnosis is made.

Is the assessment confidential?

Yes. All assessments are strictly confidential and conducted in accordance with GDPR and relevant professional guidelines. We will only share information with others (such as a GP or school) with your informed consent, unless there is a significant risk to safety.
