ASD Overview
What is autism spectrum disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person experiences the world, communicates, and relates to others. ASD presents differently for each individual — from social communication differences and repetitive behaviours, to more subtle traits such as sensory sensitivities, difficulty with change, or a strong need for routine.
Many people with autism, particularly those who mask or present without intellectual disability, go undiagnosed for years — often misinterpreted, misunderstood, or misdiagnosed with other mental health conditions.
Research suggests that early diagnosis and intervention can significantly improve outcomes by appropriately identifying challenges and providing access to specialised support and resources.

Assessment Process
Our Assessment Process
An autism assessment is a detailed, evidence-based process to explore developmental history, patterns of behaviour, sensory experiences, and social communication across different environments.
At The Neurodevelopmental Clinic, our autism assessments follow the best practices outlined by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Each assessment involves the expertise of specialist healthcare professionals working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT).
We tailor our assessments are tailored for each children, adolescent, and adult, ensuring an age-appropriate approach that takes into account individual experiences and life stages.
This process includes:
.webp)
Initial Screening
We begin with screening questionnaires to identify core concerns and determine whether a full autism assessment is indicated.
.webp)
Detailed Developmental History
We explore early development, communication, play, behaviour, relationships, and sensory experiences across the lifespan.
.webp)
Document Review
We examine any relevant educational reports, professional assessments, or third-party observations to support diagnostic formulation and contextual understanding.
.webp)
Standardised Questionnaires
Parents, partners, caregivers, and where appropriate, teachers or other informants complete validated rating scales to provide insights across settings.
.webp)
Clinical Interviews & Structured Observation
We will carry out in-depth interviews and a structured observation to assess communication style, social interaction, and behaviour in a clinically appropriate setting.
Diagnostic Formulation (MDT Review)
Our clinicians review all findings as a team, using NICE-aligned diagnostic criteria to form a shared understanding of the individual’s profile, strengths, and support needs.

Feedback and Clinical Report
After the assessment, we will arrange a feedback appointment to discuss the findings. You will receive a comprehensive diagnostic letter outlining the outcome, the factors considered, and a strengths-based summary of the individual’s profile.
Our reports include personalised recommendations for treatment, resources, and any relevant educational or workplace accommodations.
If autism is not diagnosed, we will advise on next steps — which may include further assessment, observation, or exploring alternative explanations such as trauma or other mental health conditions.
Assessment
The Importance of an Autism Assessment
A professional ASD assessment provides more than just a diagnosis—it offers individuals and families a deeper understanding of their strengths, challenges, and needs.
1
Clarity and Understanding
Many individuals go years without knowing why they feel different or struggle in certain situations. A thorough autism assessment helps make sense of lifelong patterns in communication, behaviour, and sensory experience — offering clarity, validation, and relief.
2
Access to Support and Accommodations
A formal diagnosis can open the door to support in education, employment, and healthcare. This might include learning adjustments, workplace accommodations, therapeutic interventions, and access to benefits or funded services.
3
Improved Mental Health and Self-Esteem
Undiagnosed autism is often linked with anxiety, depression, and burnout. Understanding your neurodivergent profile can reduce self-blame, improve coping strategies, and support emotional wellbeing.
4
Informed Decision-Making for the Future
An autism assessment helps individuals, families, and professionals make informed choices — from school placements and career paths, to therapy options and daily routines. It creates a foundation for tailored, meaningful support.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Can adults be diagnosed with Autism?
Yes, autism can be diagnosed in adulthood.
Many individuals reach adulthood without a diagnosis, often because their traits were masked or misunderstood — particularly in structured settings like school or work.
An adult autism assessment can provide clarity around lifelong challenges with social interaction, communication, or sensory processing. It offers not only self-understanding and validation, but also access to appropriate support, such as therapy, workplace adjustments, or community resources.
If you've always felt different and haven't known why, a diagnostic assessment can help make sense of your experiences and guide the next steps forward.
How long does an ASD assessment take?
The length of an autism (ASD) assessment can vary, but it is typically a multi-stage process designed to be thorough, accurate, and in line with clinical guidelines.
What’s Involved:
Clinical Interview – A structured conversation exploring developmental history, communication style, social interactions, sensory sensitivities, and day-to-day functioning.
Standardised Diagnostic Tools – These may include autism-specific questionnaires, structured observations (such as the ADOS-2), and other validated assessments.
Informant Input – A parent, partner, or close relative is often invited to share insights into your early development and current behaviours, helping to build a complete picture.
Duration:
Most autism assessments take several hours, often delivered over two or more sessions, depending on your individual needs and the complexity of your presentation.
After the assessment, you will receive a comprehensive diagnostic report with personalised recommendations for support, treatment options, and any necessary accommodations.
Do I need a referral for an ASD assessment?
No, a referral is not required to access an ASD assessment at The Neurodevelopmental Clinic. You can self-refer directly on our online booking portal, which allows for quicker access to diagnostic services without the delays often associated with GP referrals.
Self-referral means that if you suspect you may be autistic, you can take the first step on your own terms, without needing approval from a medical professional.
We do also accept referrals from healthcare professionals, which can help provide additional background information.
What treatment options are available for ASD in the UK?
Autism is not something that needs to be “treated” in the traditional sense, but many autistic individuals benefit from tailored support that helps them navigate daily life, relationships, and specific challenges.
Psychological Therapies
Therapy can help autistic individuals with anxiety, emotional regulation, and coping strategies. Some effective approaches include:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – Adapted versions can help with managing anxiety, rigid thinking, and emotional regulation.
Social Skills Training – Teaching strategies for social interactions, nonverbal cues, and relationship-building.
Practical Support
Occupational Therapy – Helping with sensory sensitivities, executive functioning, and independent living skills.
Speech and Language Therapy – Supporting social communication skills, particularly in work and personal relationships.
Workplace and Educational Adjustments – Applying for reasonable accommodations, such as flexible working hours, quiet spaces, and assistive technology.
Community and Peer Support – Many autistic adults find it helpful to connect with others who share similar experiences.
Mentoring and coaching – One-on-one guidance for managing work, relationships, and daily responsibilities.
What Happens If I don't receive an ASD diagnosis?
If an ASD diagnosis is not confirmed, this does not mean your experiences and challenges are not valid. Many conditions share overlapping traits with autism, such as ADHD, anxiety, sensory processing differences, or complex trauma.
Following your assessment, we will provide a clear explanation of the findings and offer guidance on next steps.
This may include:
Exploring other neurodevelopmental or mental health conditions that could explain your experiences.
Recommendations for further assessments if more information is needed.
Strategies and resources tailored to your specific strengths and challenges, even without a formal diagnosis.
Support for managing difficulties in areas like communication, emotional regulation, or daily functioning.
Our goal is to ensure you receive the understanding and support you need, whether or not you receive an ASD diagnosis.
How can I support a family member or friend with ASD?
Supporting a loved one with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) starts with understanding and acceptance. Here are a few key ways you can help:
Educate Yourself – Learn about ASD, including how it affects communication, sensory experiences, and social interactions. This can help you better understand their unique perspective.
Respect Their Needs & Boundaries – Many autistic individuals experience sensory sensitivities or social exhaustion. Be patient and accommodating of their preferences, whether that means adjusting environments or giving them space when needed.
Encourage & Advocate – Help them access resources, therapies, or accommodations in education, work, or daily life. If needed, advocate for their rights and inclusion.
Be a Supportive Presence – Sometimes, simply being there and offering reassurance is enough. Listen without judgment, validate their experiences, and respect their way of navigating the world.
Every autistic individual is unique, so the best support comes from open communication and a willingness to adapt.
